About Us

Bringing Communities Together operates from a small stone cottage, easily accessible on foot or by public transport. The house is based in the centre of Weston-super-Mare, North Somerset.

Many communities are clustered within Weston's Central Ward. There are a number of Asian restaurants and a mosque. In addition, many members of the Polish and Lithuanian communities and British people are all living alongside one other in this area. The chosen location allows BCT to be in the hub of this diverse community.

What we offer

Bringing Communities Together offers a variety of educational workshops and activities which run at the BCT house. We also provide educational services at other locations in and across North Somerset, mainly in partnership with the local authority.

Our research

In 2009 BCT carried out an environmental scanning which looked at the impact of change on both the macro and local environment. We considered a variety of areas - social, technological, economic and political - in order to anticipate and become better equipped for forthcoming change. With the imminence of the General Election it was important to be prepared for these foreseeable changes and to gauge how these would affect people, in particular the local community.

With a projected vision, we were now able to consider how and what we could do to aid the members of the community most affected by the changes. One of the key features we recognised was a despondency and lack of self-confidence felt by many.

Result of our research

Bringing Communities Together have developed a range of workshops aimed at a variety of target groups. This has been done using the knowledge we already had about these groups and the information given to us by them. In this way, we have been able to create the learning packages people really want.

One consequence of our research is that we wanted to offer the opportunity to develop belief and self-confidence at a much earlier age. With this in mind, we have organised a range of creative workshops aimed at children, some from complex family backgrounds. In these activities, children are able to express themselves freely and become more confident in who they are and what they do.

The future

The work Bringing Communities Together does is in constant process of evolution, changing with the needs of the local community and environment.
